GLORIA MARIA, A PIONEERING JOURNALIST, HAS DIED AT THE AGE OF 73.
Gloria Maria, a groundbreaking TV journalist in Brazil, has passed away at 73. She was the first prominent Black female journalist in Brazil's predominantly white-male media industry.
Maria had been hospitalized with a brain tumor in Rio de Janeiro, but the cause of her death has not been disclosed.
Brazilian President Lula paid tribute to her, calling her "one of the greatest journalists" and acknowledging her coverage of significant events in Brazil and worldwide.
During her career, Maria interviewed prominent figures like US President Jimmy Carter and celebrities like Michael Jackson and was the first female journalist from Brazil to report on a war (the Falklands War).
Maria is remembered as a role model and inspiration to Black journalists and women in Brazil.
She faced racism, including from former Brazilian President Joao Figueiredo, but also publicly fought against it by taking a hotel manager to court who denied Black people entry.
She made a big difference by covering important events in Brazil and around the world.
She broke down barriers in a field where white men were the majority.
She was also the first Brazilian woman reporter to cover a war. This has given her a lot of respect in the business.
She fought against racism even though she faced it, and many Black journalists and women were inspired to do the same.
Maria was born in Rio de Janeiro to a tailor and a housewife and left behind two daughters.
Maria will be looked up to and admired by people in the future.
